BOTOX Botolinum Toxin (Bot.Tox) is a purified toxin produced by a bacterium called Clostridium Botolinum. It has been used safely in Ophtalmology over 10 years, to treat conditions such as strabismus and blepharospasm. Botox blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. Botox relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. BENEFITS In the management of axillary hyperhidrosis, perceived increase in non axillary sweating was reported in 4.5% of patients within 1 month after injection and showed no pattern with respect to anatomical sites affected. Resolution was seen in approximately 30% of the patients with four months. Weakness of the arms has been reported uncommonly (0.7%) which was mild, transient, did not require treatment and recovered without sequelae. This event may be related to treatment, procedure or both. The treatment can decrease the strength of the muscle of which it is injected. By relaxing these muscles, frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet become less visible. The lines seem to disappear or diminish dramatically. The majority of people (82.5%) reported an improvement in the lines between their brows after a week. After 30 days, 89% of people rated the improvement in frown lines as moderate or better. Results can last up up to 4 months. WHAT CAUSES HYPERACTIVE MUSCLE
CONTRACTION Hyperactive muscle contraction, regardless of the underlying cause, is characterised by excessive release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. The use of Botolinum Toxin (Botox) can be effective in reducing this excessive activity. Botox is a natural, purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Very low does of Botox are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the overactive muscles that cause the lines to form. Botox works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles. The effects of Botox are usually confined to the injected region; it does not travel throughout the body. A Botox treatment ifs a simple, non-surgical procedure that smoothes the deep, persistent lines between your brows that develop over time. The results are dramatic and apparent within days. The clinical trials, nearly 90% of the men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their brow lines as moderate to better. For many, Botox virtually "erases" these lines. Unlike surgery, Botox is fast, simple, and minimally invasive, with no downtime or recovery. Most people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment. Within days, they report looking more natural and relaxed. With Botox they'll know you've done something, they just won't know what. No anesthesia is required, although
we usually choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream
prior to injecting. The entire procedure takes approximately ten minutes.
Discomfort is minimal and brief - most patients compare the sensation
to a bug bite. It is unlikely you will develop significant side effects,
although some people develop slight temporary bruising at the injection
site, which can easily be covered with makeup. You may resume normal activity
immediately.
